1. What is the earliest memory you have of yourself doing something creative?
I have always grown up in an artistic household where I had creative freedom. The earliest memory I have of me doing something creative was when I was around the age of 5. Singing in my little mermaid costume (yes, with the red wig and all honey!) I would enter my sibling’s room and put on a show for them constantly which would annoy the hell out of them.
2. What kind of creative work do you do?
I am a Creative Director and a Special-Effects/Makeup Artist.
3. Tell us a little about yourself and your background.
My birth name is Andreana, but you can call me Andy. I’ve been alive 23 years on this planet. I was born in Miami, but grew up in a Venezuelan household.
4. How would you describe your specific style? What makes you unique?
I would describe my style as eclectic, and sometimes cringe-worthy, whenever I do horror makeup. What makes my work distinctive? Besides the fact that special effects makeup is not as common here in Miami, I love to be versatile and bring a sense of wonder and fantasy to my work, with makeup and overall design. I try my best to create and build my characters from scratch with makeup, set/props, and costume design. I have my models bring the characters I envision to life through my art direction, which is reflected through the lens.
5. What has been some of the biggest influences and sources of inspiration in your work?
I have always loved watching Face-Off on Syfy, which by the way, if you haven’t seen it, you’re definitely missing out! I follow a couple of SFX artists such as, Rick Baker, and Joo Skellington which I feel go the extra mile to create these monsters without the use of CGI. When it comes to High Fashion Couture and Avant-Garde, my inspirations would be Alexander Mcqueen, Theirry Muglar, and the 60’s-90’s fashion era which undeniably has brought inspiration to my work as well. All of this plays a role in helping me brainstorm and create my unique characters and their personalities.
6. Do you have any rituals to help you get the creative juices flowing?
I am a huge fan of first cleansing my space with sage, incense, crystals, etc. to help relax and purify any negative vibes that can block my creative flow. Then, I turn on my speakers and listen to music while I sketch my designs and characters. The music genre depends on what series i’m working on, and what colors, and materials I want this particular character to have.
7. What have been some of your favorite projects you’ve worked on? Any current projects you’d like to mention?
My favorite project by far, is the one I’m currently working on, which is part of my 12 Horoscope/Zodiac Series. I feel like everyone can view and relate depending on which sign they are (Sun, Moon, & Rising). Each astrological sign has different qualities and personality traits and my goal is to personify each sign through their physical and emotional characteristics, the ANDYSFX way.
8. What are some of the best lessons you’ve learned while developing your craft? What valuable advice could you offer to other Creators like you?
I’ve learned to think outside the box, and to never lack significance. Every project I do, I always give it my all, and so should you. Never doubt your time and efforts, you’ll start to see your work shine through when you take your time to perfect your craft. Don’t be afraid to be different, and set aside money to INVEST IN YOUR CRAFT.
9. Where can we find more of your work and follow your journey?
You can find all my work @ANDYSFX on Instagram! Give it a follow and don’t be shy to shoot me a message (:
